How To Lose Weight (Part 1)
Article and Video By Dr. Willie T. Ong
(Internist and Cardiologist)

Some of you might ask, “Why am I gaining weight. I don’t eat as much as I used to but still I am getting bigger” Here are some tips to help you lose a little weight.
1. Check the nutritional label. Look at the calorie count per serving and see how large one serving is. To lose weight, an average meal should only be 500 calories or less.
2. Look for “Fat-Free” and “Reduced-Fat” products. Fat free means that the product contains less than half gram of fat per serving. Reduced fat means it has 25% less fat than the regular version. Fat-free is better.
3. Choose tuna packed in water. Avoid tuna soaked in oil. This will save you 2 grams of fat per tuna sandwich.
4. Buy healthy bread. There are healthy breads around like wheat bread. Some have little sugar, no cholesterol, and contain fewer calories per slice. Check the nutritional label.
5. Don’t eat croissant. A small flaky croissant may have as many as 4 teaspoonfuls of butter. The rolled dough can have up to 9 grams of fat. Take a bagel instead with only 1 gram of fat.
6. Use light spreads. There are low-fat spreads available like jams and margarine. Make sure to spread it thinly. Every little bit you scrape off and every pat less counts in your favor.
7. Increase fiber intake. Vegetables like spinach, broccoli and cabbage are high in fiber and good stomach fillers to lessen hunger.
8. Avoid loaded and killer drinks. These are no-no’s please. Avoid them like the plague. No whip cream floating on your coffee drink. No vanilla ice cream sinking in your soda float. Less syrup for the fruit shake. No to go-large drinks in fast-foods. No to bottomless iced tea.
9. Don’t stock foods at home. Your home is your last line of defense. If it’s not within your reach, then you can’t eat it. Don’t hoard food items, especially junk food, just because you think guests might come. Can you guess who will end up eating them all?
10. By all means, avoid temptation. Far from sight, far from mind. Avoid being around people that make you hungry. Avoid gatherings that tempt you to eat. Remember these tips to lose a little weight.
How To Lose Weight (Part 2)
Article and Video By Dr. Willie T. Ong

Here are more tips to lose weight:
1. No to buffets. This all-you-can-eat strategy is simply against common diet sense. Add to your dilemma the “no leftovers policy or you pay double.” Just order a la carte and look the other way.
2. Split your meals. Most restaurants offer servings fit for two persons. Don’t be ashamed to split your meals. Share your food and instantly cut your calorie intake in half.
3. Less pizza toppings. I am surprised at how much fat they can add to a flat pizza. It’s supremely unbelievable to put cheesy-cheese and hidden hotdogs inside the pizza’s crust. Talk about feeding the unsuspecting buyer. For your sake, just order Hawaiian pizza or just plain cheese.
4. Go easy on the gravy. The gravy is free but the calories will cost you. I’ve seen people make their fried chicken disappear in a pool of gravy sauce. That’s real fatty my friend.
5. Minimize mayonnaise dressings. They call it Thousand Island Dressing for a reason. It’ll cost you a thousand calories. Caesar’s dressing is undesirable too especially with the fried bacon bits. Try vinaigrette or vinegar-based dressings, although it takes a while to get used to the taste.
6. Go-Lite. Choose low-calorie food items. Some pastries, brownies and cakes are now available in lite and low-calorie versions. It’s an alternative for diabetics and those overweight. However, take these foods only in moderation.
7. Order plain rice. As your filler food, a big temptation is to go for fried rice. Order plain rice and save 30% of the calories with the same filler effect.
8. Eat bread instead of rice. Low-fat sandwiches, like Subway, are good diet options. They’re packed with vegetables and healthier meat like turkey or tuna. Just skip the mayonnaise or spread just a little for taste.
9. Go vegetarian. Some vegetarian restaurants offer low fat and tasty recipes. They’re healthy. But just don’t eat vege-meat everyday as they’re high in uric acid and can make you develop kidney stones.
10. H20 has 0 calories. When they ask you what drink you like, say cold bottled water. It has no calories.
11. Walk after eating. Once you’ve eaten, don’t get stuck on the sofa, watching your favorite soap opera. Take a short walk and burn a few calories. It will help in the digestion. I hope these tips help. Good luck on your diet.

Vitamins That Are Good for Your Skin
Every lady knows that vitamins are crucial in skin care. They are what make your skin strong and resistant. They make you glow and look younger. Find out more about little used vitamins that are good for your skin.

We all know that vitamin C is the best vitamin for the skin. It is the first defense against aging and the perfect prevention against skin ulcers. But it is not the only one. Learn about more vitamins you should use in order to have healthy skin.

1. Vitamin A
Vitamin A is proved to reduce wrinkles, to smooth your skin and to fade discolored spots. It is found in face creams that contain a substance called retinoids.
These face creams should be used as night creams mostly, because sunlight makes most forms of vitamin A inactive. You should never apply a cream with vitamin A and go sunbathing.
When it comes to reducing your wrinkles, retinoids might just be what you’re looking for. Why? They are said to be the fastest solution for wrinkle reduction. They usually show first results in 4-8 weeks.
There is, however, a downside of using retinoids. They can cause redness and itchy skin. Make sure you consult your dermatologist before using any type of vitamin A face cream, especially if your skin is sensitive.

2. Vitamin B
Vitamin B is the natural protector of your skin. It induces the production of fatty acids in your skin whose main responsibility is to protect the skin from the elements.
Vitamin B is usually found under the name niacinamide in the skin products. It boosts your skin hydration and can reduce redness. Vitamin B products should be applied twice a day – in the morning and in the evening.
Vitamin B face cream could even help you reduce redness caused by use of Vitamin A cream. The two can be mixed together, they won’t make each other inactive.
Vitamin B makes your skin soft and gives it back its natural glow. It is a necessity during the cold winter days when your skin suffers a lot in the cold air.

3. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is the one of the key components of every sunscreen and tanning lotion. There is a good reason for that. You won’t find a substance that is better for protecting your skin from sun damages and revive it after it has already suffered sun damage.
Vitamin E restores your skins’ natural hydration. That is exactly why it is crucial in sunscreens. Sunbathing makes your skin dry and that eventually leads to the skin aging faster. Vitamin E restores its moisture and keeps your skin look younger. It is also said to be able to block damaging free radicals and to be a very powerful anti – oxidant.
For best results, combine creams with vitamin E and C when you are going to sunbathe. Apply a lotion with vitamin E after sunbathing to reduce redness and induce your skin’s natural hydration.

4. Vitamin K
Vitamin K is a little known vitamin that is good for your skin. You will mostly find it in eye creams – it is the vitamin for brighter, younger eyes.
Vitamin K is said to be able to lighten the dark circles under your eyes. Those circles are said to be induced by weak capillaries in the area, and vitamin K controls blood clothing, thus reducing the dark circles. You will see first results after four months.
Apply the cream, just under the eye, right before you go to bed. The skin around your eyes will relax and it will be able to properly absorb the cream.
Even though vitamin C is not mentioned on this list, don’t forget it. It is the best anti-ager out there and it brings a lot of other benefits for your skin. Combine it with these vitamins and give your skin the care it deserves.

DIYETA SA DIABETES
by Dr. Willie T. Ong

4. Mansanas at peras ang pang-diyeta na prutas.
Akala nang marami ay “all you can eat” ang mga prutas. Mali!

WHO KNEW CUCUMBERS COULD DO ALL THIS!!!

Spice up your 8 glasses per day of water with a slice or two of cucumber. It’s wonderfully refreshing, but there are amazing benefits to cucumber as well. Cucumbers are cooler than you think …
SHARE THIS AWESOME INFORMATION

1. Fat busting: Do you ever wonder why women put cucumbers on their eyes to relieve puffiness? The photochemical in cucumbers makes the collagen in your skin tighten, thus the lack of puffiness. Did you know that you can rub a cucumber on a problematic spot of cellulite anywhere on your body to lessen the visibility of it? Did you also know that it has the same effect on wrinkles? Wow, it makes purchasing those fifty dollar creams seem a little silly, doesn’t it? You can also rub a little bit under your kiddo’s eyes after a long bout of crying to avoid that puffy ‘I cried for an hour straight’ look.
2. Defogger: Do you get annoyed when you get out of the shower and you have to fight the fog on the mirror? Who has time for that when the kids will be awake at any moment? Try rubbing a slice of cucumber on the mirror before you hop in and not only will you get a fog-free mirror, but you’ll have a nice smell that will boost your mood.
3. Headaches: If you suffer from headaches from chasing your babies all day (or pets or your husband), or had a little too much wine with dinner and want to avoid a hangover, eat half of a cucumber before bed. Cucumbers are high in B vitamins, sugar, and electrolytes, and they replenish the nutrients missing in your body to help you avoid a hang over or to beat that headache that’s been threatening to take over.
4. WD-40 replacement: Did you know you can get rid of a squeak by rubbing a cucumber on the hinge? Wow, now you don’t have to tear your garage apart looking for that little can with the red straw, and the baby won’t wake up when you slowly open the nursery door to check on him.
5. Crayon on the walls: Take an unpeeled cucumber and rub the crayon off of the walls in the event that your kiddo left you some art. You can also use this technique to erase a pen mistake.
6. Halitosis killer: Take a slice of cucumber and put it on the roof of your mouth. Hold it there with your tongue for 30 seconds. The photochemical that you love for cellulite and puff reduction will also kill the bacteria that is causing your bad breath.
7. Tarnish remover: If you’re finding tarnish on your stainless steel kitchen faucets and appliances? Rub it off with a cucumber slice. Not only will it remove years of tarnish, it will leave it streak free and your hands will thank you, and your kids won’t be put at risk from a dangerous chemical.
8. Energy booster: If you’re feeling tired in the afternoon, don’t give Starbucks your five bucks. Instead, grab a cucumber. There are just enough carbohydrates and B vitamins to give you a longer-lasting and healthier boost of energy than soda, coffee, or those health hazard energy drinks.
9. Munchy madness: Did you know that European trappers ate cucumbers for energy and to keep from starving to death? If those big burly manly men can eat a cucumber to keep from starving, you can eat one as a healthy choice when the munchies hit. Slice some up and take them in a small plastic container to the movies if your theater doesn’t offer healthy alternatives to munching on butter soaked popcorn.
10. Frugal facial: Slice up a cucumber and boil it in a pot of water. The chemicals inside of the cucumber will mix with the steam. Remove the pot from heat and lean over it, letting the steam hit you. Your skin will be more radiant and healthy, and you will feel relaxed and rejuvenated.
11. Shoe polish: Cut a slice off of your cucumber and rub it on your shoe. It will not only shine it up, but it will repel water.
12. Pest control: Put three or four slices of cucumber in a small pie tin and place them in your garden. The chemicals in the cucumber have a reaction that pests hate. You won’t smell it, but it will drive them from your garden all year long. Replace them periodically.
13. Sunburn: Sometimes sun block doesn’t always protect your little ones from sunburn. If you have burnt little kiddos you don’t have any aloe, rub some cucumber on them. Many doctors even use cucumber to treat patients with irritated skin and sunburns.
14. Blood pressure: Cucumber has been long used to treat high blood pressure. If you have it, add cucumbers to your daily diet. There is also ongoing research into the use of cucumbers for lowering cholesterol.
15. Constipation remedy: The seeds of a cucumber are a diuretic. If you’re constipated, try eating a cucumber. If you suffer from chronic constipation, add cucumber to your daily diet

PULIKAT (Cramps)

Warning

Ang excessive cramping o painful cramping ay maaari ring maging senyales ng kumplikasyon habang nagbubuntis, may kidney disease, thyroid disease, restless leg syndrome (RLS), multiple sclerosis, hypokalemia, o hypocalcemia.

by Dr. Willie T. Ong

Kailangan magpa-check up agad sa isang cardiologist.
Huwag mangamba. May pag-asa pa kahit mahina ang inyong puso.

SIMPLENG TIPS SA PAGTULOG
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

At saka may hang-over ka pa.
Good luck po!

Some people believe that hair abuse is the cause but this is not the true reason

HUWAG MAGPAKABUSOG

6. Kumain ng isda kaysa karne.
7. Umiwas sa matataba at matatamis. Iwas sa soft drinks, iced tea at cakes.
8. Umiwas sa alak at kape. Nakakairita ito ng prostate.

Natural na lunas sa prostate:
Good luck po!

3. MAKE TIME FOR A MINI SELF MASSAGE
4. TRY A TONIC
5. SAY CHEESE

by Dr. Willie T. Ong

Malulunasan natin iyan.

Carrot, Egg or Coffee?

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.
Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me, what do you see?”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma.
The daughter then asked, “What does it mean, mother?”
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity… boiling water. Each reacted differently.
The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
“Which are you?” she asked her daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?”
Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a separation, job loss, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changed the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.
How do you handle adversity? Are you a CARROT, an EGG or a COFFEE BEAN?

LOWER YOUR CHOLESTEROL NATURALLY
By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist and Cardiologist)

Most doctors follow the time-tested National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines for the treatment of high cholesterol. In layman’s terms, the recommendations are as follows:
For persons with a total cholesterol of more than 280 mg/dl or an LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol type) of greater than 190 mg/dl, drug treatment may be started after (a) an eight-week trial of diet and exercise and (b) confirmation of cholesterol levels beyond the above cut-offs.
For those persons who have heart disease, hypertension or are heavy cigarette smokers, drug treatment is started at a much lower cholesterol level of 240 mg/dl and higher or an LDL cholesterol of more than 160 mg/dl.
And for those who have diabetes or have already suffered a heart attack or stroke, they are the ones who would most benefit from the statin drugs, even if their cholesterol levels are just over 200 mg/dl or an LDL cholesterol of more than 130 mg/dl.
Natural Remedies:
Drugs are expensive and entail frequent monitoring for side effects. Thus, lifestyle changes should be maximized.
1. Oatmeal and oat bran are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, potassium, vitamin Bs, calcium and a soluble fiber called beta glucans. These beta glucans work by interfering with the absorption and production of cholesterol. Studies show that if you eat a cup of oatmeal every day, you can reduce your cholesterol level by an average of 10%. Furthermore, Chicago cardiologist Dr. Michael Davidson adds that one-third of patients who ate more oats were spared from taking an anti-cholesterol medicine.
2. Eat more oily fishes, like sardines, salmon, tilapia and bangus. These fishes are rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids that help dilate the blood vessels of the heart and brain. Thus, it can improve blood flow to these vital organs. A large Japanese study showed that patients who took omega-3 fish oil supplements lowered their bad cholesterol by 26% and reduced heart attacks by 19%. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian from Harvard Medical School believes that taking 2-3 servings of fish every week already confers substantial health benefits.
3. Eating garlic is good for the heart, too. Garlic contains allyl sulfides which may help lower cholesterol levels. According to Dr. Robert Lin, a leading garlic researcher, taking 3 cloves of garlic a day can reduce your cholesterol levels by 10-15%. Cook garlic lightly. Don’t burn it, or else it will lose its health effects.
4. Patients are encouraged to increase their intake of fish and vegetables. Likewise, increase your fiber consumption, such as apples, legumes, and grains, since fiber removes the cholesterol from your body.
5. Avoid these foods. Try replacing high-fat food items with low-fat options. Craving for full cream milk? Try skim milk.
6. Try boiling or broiling foods as opposed to frying.
7. Exercise is very effective in lowering your bad LDL-cholesterol and increasing your good HDL-cholesterol. A general increase in physical activity is encouraged. The best exercise is still brisk walking, 5 times a week for about an hour.
Drug treatment options:
If diet and exercise fail (meaning your cholesterol levels are still above the cut-off levels), then the best drugs around are the statins, such as simvastatin or atorvastatin.
A common question is: How long should I take statins? Studies show that statins should be taken for 3 to 5 years to reap lasting benefits.

BEST WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR KIDNEYS
By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist and Cardiologist)

Most people know how to protect the heart, but do you know how to care for your kidneys? The kidneys’ job is to help remove various toxins (drugs and food wastes), and expel them through the urine.
As we grow older, our kidneys will also start to age. A problem with kidney disease is that majority of patients have no warning symptoms.
Some time ago, we interviewed Dr. Elizabeth Montemayor, a nephrologist at the Philippine General Hospital. Here are 10 ways to protect your kidneys:
1. Limit your salt intake — Too much salt is not only bad for your blood pressure, it’s also bad for your kidneys. Many die of kidney disease, which can be partly attributed to a high salt intake and fondness for fish sauce, soy sauce, plain salt and salted fish. Even instant noodles, chips and nuts are teeming with salt. The problem with salt is that it encourages the body to retain water, and can increase your blood pressure (which damages the kidneys).
2. Don’t load up on high protein foods such as meat and steaks –A high protein diet makes the kidneys work twice as hard. Pretty soon, your kidneys could get tired and some of the weaker kidney cells can die. A friendly reminder to people on a high-protein Atkin’s Diet or South Beach Diet. The time-tested doctor’s advice of moderation in everything will serve you well. Eat a balanced diet of rice, vegetables, fish and fruits and you can’t go wrong.
3. Keep your blood pressure at 130/80 or lower — If your blood pressure is above 140 over 90, this can cause kidney damage within five years. The kidneys are said to be “happiest” with a blood pressure of 130/80 or lower. To help control your blood pressure, you should limit your salt intake, reduce weight and take medicines for high blood pressure, if needed.
4. Keep your blood sugar below 120 mg/dl — Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney failure. A person with uncontrolled diabetes for 5-10 years may develop significant kidney damage. Consult your doctor and keep your blood sugar under control with diet, exercise and maintenance medicines.
5. Drink 8 glasses of water a day — Doctors usually advise people to take in 8 glasses of water a day, but this really depends on your age and condition. If you’re sweating a lot and work outdoors, you may need to drink more than 8 glasses a day. However, if you are above 65 years of age, you may do well with just 6 glasses a day. Drinking enough water also prevents the formation of kidney stones.
6. Watch your intake of pain relievers and other drugs — Taking pain relievers like mefenamic acid, ibuprofen and the coxibs (like celecoxib) for a prolonged period of time may cause kidney damage. Because of this, we should limit taking these medicines to only a week, or just take them as needed. For those with chronic arthritis, try to look for other ways to relieve the pain such as using a hot water bag, pain reliever ointments, or the safer paracetamol tablet.
7. Be careful with tests and procedures using contrast dyes — Some tests, like CT Scans and MRIs, and angiograms, use a contrast dye which helps doctors delineate the organs better. The problem with such dyes is that they can cause kidney damage. To be safe, I would strongly advise you to consult a kidney specialist before undergoing such procedures.
8. Don’t drink too much Vitamin C — Excess vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can lead to the formation of kidney stones in predisposed individuals. If you need to take vitamin C, a dose of 500 mg or less is safer.
9. Don’t rely on food supplements to protect your kidneys — The above tips are so far the best tips to care for the kidneys.
10. Get a kidney check-up –Simple tests, such as a complete blood count, BUN and creatinine, and a urinalysis are the first screening tests for the kidneys. Finding a trace of protein in the urine can alert the doctor of possible kidney disease.
Bottomline is: Kidney diseases are expensive and difficult to treat. Let’s take the necessary steps to protect our kidneys today.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WATERMELONS
By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist and Cardiologist)

Every two cups of watermelon (280 g) contain 80 calories, zero fat, 27 g of carbohydrate, 10 mg sodium, 80 mcg of Vitamin A, lots of Vitamin Bs, 80 mg of Vitamin C, 18 mg of lycopene, and ample amounts of potassium, iron and calcium.
Health Benefits of Watermelon:
1. May help prevent cancer and slow down aging – The deep-red watermelon variety contains the pigment lycopene, which may help prevent prostate cancer. This antioxidant helps counter the bad effects of free radicals circulating in the body. Once we reduce these free radicals, we can theoretically slow down aging. Tomato is another good source of lycopene.
2. Good for the heart and blood vessels — US Department of Agriculture researchers report that eating watermelons increases our body’s arginine levels, an important amino acid (Journal of Nutrition, March 2007). Arginine is a component needed to produce nitric oxide, a substance that relaxes the blood vessels, improves blood flow and may save us from a heart attack and stroke. In addition, watermelon may help people with high blood pressure because of arginine’s vessel-dilating effect and its potassium and magnesium content.
3. Natural source of alkaline water — The good news is that watermelon is made of 92% pure alkaline water. A lot has been said about the possible benefits of alkaline water. Compared to the acidic juices of oranges and pineapple (which may irritate people with ulcer and gastritis), watermelon is safe for your stomach.
4. Good for the mouth and digestive tract – Watermelon has health benefits for the whole digestive tract, starting from the mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestines. Watermelon can relieve the pain of people with canker sores or mouth sores. Some experts claim that watermelon can also minimize bad breath. And as it goes down to the intestines, it can treat constipation and normalize your bowel movement.
5. Good for the eyes — Watermelon’s vitamin A and vitamin C content are beneficial for our eyes. Yellow watermelon, is a good source of lutein, which is important for preventing age-related macular degeneration. So remember, red watermelon to prevent cancer and yellow watermelon for the eyes.
6. Good for the kidneys, bladder, and those with gout — Just like coconut water, watermelons are effective for cleansing the kidneys and bladder. If you have urinary tract infection or kidney stones, drinking lots of watermelon juice (and distilled water, too) can help you with your condition. Moreover, watermelon does not contain uric acid, and can help people with gout by reducing the amount of uric acid in the body.
7. Your natural energy drink — Watermelon gives a rich source of B vitamins, electrolytes and potassium. The B vitamins are needed for energy production and potassium is essential for heart and muscle contraction. Compared to an apple, watermelon has only half as much sugar, and yet, it tastes sweeter because of its high water content.
8. Prevents heat stroke and heat exhaustion — Watermelon has long provided a safe source of fluid for many desert regions in the world. Watermelon’s cooling effect comes from its component citrulline, which is converted to arginine in the body. Arginine can help remove ammonia from the body (bad stuff in the urine). In South Africa, watermelon rind is placed on the forehead and temples to cool a headache.
9. Treatment for heat rash and burns — Watermelon pulp can be used to treat heat rash and burns. Heat rashes are pimple-like eruptions at the back and chest area due to excessive sweating and heat. Try this as a home remedy: Place a watermelon rind in a refrigerator and let it cool. After a few hours, apply the inner part of the rind on the affected areas of the body. The cooling effect of watermelon rind relieves the heat rash.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE EATING

WHAT DOES THE NUMBER ON A FRUIT STICKER MEAN?
Did you know the PLU(Product Look Up) code is NOT JUST FOR YOUR STORE CASHIER? It also tells you a lot about your Fresh Fruit and Vegetables.
True, the cashier always types in that 3-9 digit code on every piece of produce in their register to locate the price per pound, but it can also inform the consumer how that fruit or vegetable was grown.
Here is a simple breakdown of what you are buying:
- PLU stickers that have 4 digits and begin with a “3? or “4?: produce is conventionally grown. This means that this produce was sprayed with weed killers and chemical pesticides.
- PLU stickers that have 5-digits and start with “8?: produce was genetically engineered (man intervened by manipulating the genes to produce a larger or brighter colored food). This produce may have been chemically treated.
- PLU stickers that have 5-digits and start with “9?: produce was raised ORGANICALLY. You can be sure that this produce was not treated with any chemicals.

6-S NA SAKIT SA TAG-INIT
by Dr. Willie T. Ong

BENEFITS OF AVOCADO

Avocados are now in season. Take advantage of the abundance of avocados now because avocados are so good for us.
Avocados are rich in beta carotene, lutein, vitamins B6, C, E, K, selenium, zinc, folate, potassium, glutathione and omega 3 fatty acids. Here are the benefits from avocados:
1) Prevent liver damage — avocados protect our liver. In an experiment in Japan, rats were fed avocados and other fruits. Then they were given a liver toxin.
The rats fed with avocados had the least amount of liver damage. So if you like drinking alcohol, load up on avocados!
2) Beauty masks — avocados are rich in oil – you can use them as mask for the face and the hair.
Hair mask for shiny hair – mash one avocado, add one tsp honey and two tbsp olive oil, mash together and apply to hair. After 20 minutes, wash the hair.
Face mask- Mash one avocado, add one tsp honey, and one tbsp yogurt. Mix the ingredients, and apply as face mask. After 15 minutes, wash the face.
3) Improve the blood pressure.
4) Helps the eye. Avocados have lutein. Lutein is an anti-oxidant that protects against eye diseases.
5) Avocados contain natural fiber that helps with digestion and absorption of nutrients.
6) Healthy fats in avocados raise the good (HDL) cholesterol while lowering bad cholesterol.
7) Avocados contain more potassium than bananas. Potassium regulates blood pressure.
Avocados have anti inflammatory properties to treat arthritis.
9) Oleic acid from avocados improves the cardio vascular system and protect against prostate and breast cancer.
10) Avocados increase collagen production, reducing size and appearance of wrinkles.
11) If you have sunburn, eczema or psoriasis, use the pulp closest to the skin to treat these skin issues.
STEPS TO A YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN…

FLU, COLD AND FEVER TREATMENT

No one wants to get sick. You’re stuck in bed and you can’t do much. How do you make yourself heal faster? The advices I’ve listed here mostly apply to a bout of fever, from the flu or the common cold, but it can be useful for other sickness, too.

1. See or call your doctor. Doctors have to get the correct diagnosis first, before they can prescribe a cure.
2. Take your medicines. Once your doctor prescribes you a medicine, you should take it religiously.
3. Don’t let the fever go high. Hence, take a paracetamol/acetaminophen 250 mg or 500 mg tablet every 4 hours. If your fever is more than 39 degrees centigrade, this can lead to confusion and maybe even convulsions. Keep the fever below 38 degrees centrigrade most of the time. High fever feels awful and you don’t know what added harm it will do to your body.
4. Take antibiotics if needed. If it’s a bacterial infection, say pneumonia or tonsillitis, ordinary medicines can’t cure you. You need your antibiotics to destroy the bacteria. Take your antibiotics at the right dosage and the prescribed length of time.
5. Rest often. On some days, you may need to just eat, lie down and sleep. Go with the ebb and flow of energy. Rest if you feel weak. Do light chores if you feel strong. And sleep as long as you like.
6. Eat more food than usual. Common-sense dictates that you need energy to help the body fight the enemy. Hence, try to munch every now and then even if you can’t taste or enjoy your food. Just eat a little throughout the day.
7. Take yogurt every day especially if you are taking antibiotics. Yogurt has the beneficial bacteria, called lactobacilli, which helps replenish the good bacteria removed by the antibiotics.
8. Drink lots of water and vitamin C-rich juices like lemonade or orange juice. Drinking 8 to 12 glasses a day can help decrease the fever, keep you hydrated and loosen sticky phlegm.
9. Take chicken soup. Studies have shown that chicken soup can help cure a bout of flu. According to a study by Dr. Stephen Rennard at the University of Nebraska, chicken soup contains the amino acid, cysteine, which can reduce colds and phlegm by decreasing the inflammatory response of the body. In order to maximize the benefit of chicken soup, add carrots, ginger, garlic, sweet potato and black pepper to your soup.
10. Keep your environment cool and comfortable. The ideal room temperature is at 24 to 25 degrees centigrade. Resist the urge to cover yourself with thick blankets as this will only worsen your fever.
11. Listen to relaxing music. Music can have a healing effect on you.
12. If you have a high fever, I believe it is better not to take a bath. Just clean yourself with a wet towel with soap. There’s no strict prohibition but taking a bath can be tiring and can cause an abrupt temperature change in your body.
13. Have a positive attitude. Image your body’s cell fighting the infection.
14. Pray that you will get well soon and without any complications. And make sure you are fully recovered before going back to work. Take care.

DRY COUGH: ANONG DAHILAN?
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

Tumayo muna at maglakad.

By Dr. Willie T. Ong

May kasabihan na “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Mali po iyan. Ang bago ngayon ay “Two bananas a day keep the doctor away.”
A: 430 I.U., Vitamin B: Thiamine .04 mg., Vitamin C: 10 mg., Calcium: 8 mg., Iron: 6 mg., Phosphorus: 28 mg., Potassium: 260 mg., Carbohydrates: 23 grams, at Protein: 1.2 mg.
Sobrang Dami ang Benepisyo ng Saging:
3. Parang Multivitamin – Kung susuriin mo, parang multivitamin na ang saging dahil may vitamin A, B, C, Calcium, Iron, at Potassium ito. Kapag kumain ka ng 2 saging bawat araw, you can Have It All like Edu Manzano and Feel Complete like Piolo Pascual. Tipid pa!
BREATH EASY: 21 TIPS FOR ASTHMATICS AND EVERYONE
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

An asthma attack is caused by the swelling of the small lung passages (called bronchioles). During an attack, these tiny lung passages constrict and get blocked by phlegm. Hence, patients experience difficulty of breathing, coughing and wheezing. Wheezing is a high-pitched sound similar to a cat’s cry. The good news is that lifestyle changes can reduce your asthma attacks by 50%. Here is what you need to do:
1. Identify and avoid asthma triggers. Did you know that around 80% of people with asthma also have an allergy? Think about what you were doing before you had the attack. Did you smell some dusty or pungent material? Were you tired, angry or stressed? Was it hot? Note these down and avoid these situations in the future.
2. Are you allergic to food? Some asthmatics have a specific food allergy. Be careful with food preservatives, food coloring, junk food, wine, nuts, seafoods, egg and chicken. Find out if you’re allergic to these foods and avoid them. You can consult an allergologist-doctor.
3. Be careful with medicines. There are people who are allergic to drugs like aspirin, penicillin and pain relievers. Ask your doctor before taking an herbal supplement, too. Paracetamol for fever or pain is probably safest for you.
4. Avoid pollen. During the summer season, large quantities of pollen emanate from trees and grass. If it’s a hot and windy day, try to avoid going out of the house. Close your bedroom windows. There’s also more pollen before 10 AM.
5. You may open bathroom windows. Molds and fungi can trigger asthma, too. Molds like to grow in damp places like your bathroom. Hence, dry your bathroom after using.
6. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck out dust from your bed, sofa and floor. It’s a very effective way to reduce asthma attacks.
7. Simplify your homes. Don’t use carpets or rugs as these can accumulate lots of dust. Use washable curtains and blinds. There are likewise special dust-free pillow cases you can use.
8. Avoid pet dogs and cats. If you have pets at home, bathe them every week to reduce falling dander. However, it would be best if you didn’t have pets inside your house because their tiny hairs can penetrate and irritate your lung passages.
9. Reduce cooking smells by opening the kitchen window. Strong smells from frying onions and garlic can trigger an asthma attack. Open the windows or better yet, do your cooking outside the house.
10. Keep your house squeaky clean. Allergy and asthma are usually triggered by small insects called dust mites. These microscopic bugs live and eat dead skin cells which we shed off daily. To eliminate dust mites, wash your bed sheets, pillows and blankets every week. Place them under the sun to kill the mites.
11. Avoid smoke and cigarette smokers, too. Request your relatives and friends not to smoke in front of you. Limit going out on public transportation where bus fumes and dust abound. If you need to go out, a face mask may help.
12. Use an air-conditioner. Air conditioning is extremely helpful because it lowers humidity and filters dust and pollen, making breathing much easier. You can also try an air filter, and see if it helps.
13. Eat fruits and vegetables high in flavonoids such as oranges, pomelo, apples, grapes, and calamansi juice. These flavonoids strengthen our lungs, blood vessels and immune system.
14. Eat oily fish like sardines, salmon and tilapia. These fishes contain omega-3 fatty acids, which may be beneficial for asthma patients.
15. During an asthma attack, one home remedy is to drink a cup of black coffee. Studies show that caffeine acts similar to the anti-asthma drug theophylline and may open up the lung passages. However, if your symptoms are severe, it’s best to go to a hospital.
16. Avoid soft drinks and foods containing MSG. Especially for kids, MSG can trigger an asthma attack. Junk foods and some Chinese foods are high in MSG.
17. Avoid very cold or very hot weather. Extreme weather conditions can trigger an asthma attack.
18. Exercise regularly but don’t overdo it. You can go to a gym and try strengthening exercises for your arms, shoulders, chest and back muscles. These muscle groups are important for breathing. Swimming and singing are good exercises, too.
19. Try abdominal breathing. There are two ways to breathe: using your chest or using your abdomen. Abdominal breathing is more effective than chest breathing because it uses the more powerful abdominal muscle called the diaphragm. To illustrate, lie down on the floor and place your hands on your tummy. Then, as you inhale, your hands should elevate but your chest should hardly move. Abdominal breathing sucks in more air inside your lungs.
20. Wash your hands regularly to avoid viruses and bacteria. If you catch a cold, this can lead to an asthma attack.
21. See your doctor often. Your lung specialist (also called pulmonologist) will know if you need maintenance medicines. If these drugs and inhalers are too expensive, you can try buying from a generic drugstore. Remember that asthma can be a serious and potentially deadly condition. Work hand in hand with your doctor to keep you asthma under control. Take care.

AIDS: Safe ka ba?
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

A: Abstinence. Umiwas muna sa sex.
B: Be faithful sa iyong asawa.
C: Careful sa sex. Gumamit ng condom kung kinakailangan.
D: Don’t share needles. Umiwas sa drogang ini-injection sa katawan.
E: Education. Alamin ang paraan para makaiwas sa HIV-AIDS. Mag-ingat po tayo.
FOGGING AT SPRAYING MAY EPEKTO SA KALUSUGAN
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

By Dr. Willie T. Ong

ARE YOU AN ALCOHOLIC?
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

Some people cannot differentiate social drinking from alcohol abuse. To avoid confusion, a set of questions has been formulated in order to diagnose alcoholism. If a person answers yes to 3 of the following 7 questions, then there is alcohol abuse.

During the past 12 months, have you experienced the following?
1. Have you developed tolerance to alcohol, which means that you need to drink increasing amounts of alcohol to get the same feeling of drunkenness?
2. When you stop drinking alcohol, do you experience nausea, trembling, insomnia and anxiety?
3. Do you often find yourself drinking more alcohol than you initially intended?
4. Do you have a desire to cut back on your drinking but cannot succeed in doing so?
5. Do you drink four or more times in a week?
6. Have you given up on important work and family activities just so that you can drink alcohol?
7. Do you continue to drink alcohol, despite knowing that it may be causing you some health problems?
Medical Treatment:
1. Set a date on when you want to quit. The difficult part is the first step, which is to seek medical help. The person must be ready to accept that he or she may be dependent on alcohol. Although some people say they will cut down on their drinking, the goal should be to completely stop drinking.
2. In severe cases of alcoholism, the patient will experience withdrawal symptoms when he stops drinking. If the symptoms are severe, the patient may need some medications like sedatives. Detoxification from alcohol is usually done in the hospital.
3. A complete medical work-up is done to check if there are organs affected by the alcohol drinking. Tests for the liver, heart and brain may be requested. If other medical conditions are found (like diabetes or heart disease), then these will also be treated.
4. There are some oral and injectable medicines available to help discourage the patient from again abusing alcohol. Drugs like disulfiram (Antabuse) will produce severe reactions like nausea, vomiting and headache should the patient drink again.
5. Counseling and therapy are important to help the patient change his behavior and cope with temptation. In more serious cases, there are residential facilities for substance abusers that offer counseling, lectures and medical treatment to make sure that they don’t revert back to their old ways. Family support plays a big role in the recovery of an alcoholic.
6. Pray and go to church. Many alcoholics have been cured by returning to their spiritual roots. The temptation may be strong, but your faith in God can be stronger.
As you can see, social drinking may not be as harmless as it seems. Be sure that you stay in the narrow and sober path.

Natural Remedy for Calluses!

So many of us suffer from these, hard little patches of built up skin! Don´t worry, its perfectly normal, when a body part continually rubs against something the tender skin forms a protective barrier of hard skin to protect the area it feels is in danger of an injury. The most common place for calluses is on the hands and feet.
It does take time to get rid of them, but it can be done. There are even a couple of good and, even better, natural and inexpensive homemade solutions:
Sugar Scrubs:
Place ¾ cup of granulated sugar in a dry jar, and add enough mineral oil to form a loose paste, after that you can add peppermint, spearmint, sandalwood, musk or any essential oil (optional). Mix it all together, then scrub and gently massage, you can use this anywhere you want to have smooth, soft skin. Do this before shaving your legs, it feels incredible!
Pineapple Peel and Oils:
Cut strips of pineapple peel and cover the callus completely, then tape the pineapple peel in place and leave it on for a couple of hours and repeat it for one week, changing when necessary. The enzymes and acid content of the fresh pineapple will remove the callus. Another option is to apply wheat germ oil, castor oil, sesame oil, coconut oil or olive oil onto the callused area several times a day.

Sabaw Ng Manok: Pampalakas Ng Katawan (Chicken Soup)

By Dr. Willie T. Ong
4. Ilagay ang wallet sa harap ng pantalon. Huwag kapalan ang wallet at bawasan ang laman nito.

By Dr. Willie T. Ong

10. Kumunsulta sa doktor at magpa-check up bawat taon. Good luck.

Best Foods To Prevent Constipation
Article and Video By Dr. Willie T. Ong
(Internist and Cardiologist)

Constipation is a common complaint of many people. Constipation by itself isn’t necessarily harmful but it may aggravate certain conditions such as heart disease, hernia and hemorrhoids.
Elderly individuals usually experience a slowing down of the digestive system and this causes constipation. Young women who want to lose weight often abuse laxative tea and drinks, and this predisposes them to develop constipation later on. The use of laxatives is frowned upon by doctors because this can result in electrolyte imbalance and dependence on the drug.
Basic tips to prevent constipation include drinking more water, moving about and exercising. In addition, fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables add bulk to the stool and help normalize bowel movement.
1. Papaya — A ripe papaya is probably the best local fruit available to relieve constipation. Eating one or two slices a day will surely soften your stools. And consuming much more can lead to diarrhea. Just eat the right amount to get the right consistency of the stools. Papaya contains a special ingredient called papain, which is a protein-digesting enzyme that helps ease constipation. It’s also loaded in vitamin C, even more than an orange.
2. Pear — Pears are rich in fiber and sorbitol, both of which make it an ideal natural laxative. Fiber forms the bulk of the stools and helps to move the bowels. Sorbitol, on the other hand, is responsible for the sweetness of the pear and likewise acts as a laxative by drawing water inside the large intestine. Dr. Jay Hoecker of the Mayo Clinic suggests giving pear juice to infants with constipation. Dr. Hoecker says that giving two to four ounces of pear juice may be enough to promote a bowel movement.
3. Prunes and grapes — Although fresh prunes are hard to find, we can still buy prune juice and dried prunes from the supermarkets. Prunes contain large amounts of dietary fiber, sorbitol and antioxidants. Sorbitol is a stimulant of the colon and helps quicken the movement of stools along the intestines.
4. Watermelon – Watermelon contains 92% alkaline water. It has lots of vitamin A, Vitamin Bs, Vitamin C, lycopene and potassium. Eating a slice or two of watermelon daily may be all you need to soften your stools. In fact, watermelon has health benefits for the whole digestive tract, starting from the mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestines.
5. Green leafy vegetables, especially spinach — Green leafy vegetables contain large amounts of fiber which is good for the intestines. Among the vegetables, spinach is particularly helpful in relieving constipation because of its high magnesium content. In fact, magnesium preparations (such as Milk of Magnesia or magnesium hydroxide) are frequently used as a laxative and as a treatment for hyperacidity.
6. Water – Eating a high fiber diet is not enough to prevent constipation. We should drink enough water, which will then be combined with the fiber, and this will help form the bulk of the stools. For the average individual, try to drink around eight glasses of water or liquids in a day. If you’re on a high-fiber diet, you may need to drink even more water.
7. There are other high-fiber foods you may like to try such as wheat bread, brown rice and beans. Don’t overdo it though. Just eat adequate amounts of these healthy foods and drink your eight glasses of water every day. However, if symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

The Right Way To Drink Water
By Dr. Willie T. Ong
(Internist-Cardiologist)

Here are the benefits of drinking water:
1. Water prevents kidney stones. The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough water. Since water dissolves the substances that form stones in the urine, drinking 12 glasses daily helps treat kidney stones.
2. Water treats urinary tract infection. The more water you drink, the more you will urinate. Drinking lots of water will help flush out harmful bacteria from your bladder.
3. Water helps patients with diarrhea by preventing dehydration.
4. Water helps reduce fever. For symptoms of flu, water can help lower your body temperature when you urinate the “heat” out of your body. If you’re sick, drink more water for you to recover faster.
5. Water helps treat cough and colds, sore throat, and respiratory infections. Water helps loosen sticky phlegm.
6. Water reduces heartburn. Taking 2-3 gulps of water every 20 minutes or so can help flush the stomach acid away. Bananas and water are effective alternatives to taking antacids. Try it.
7. Water prevents constipation and its complications. Too little water can harden the stools and lead to hemorrhoids and diverticulosis, a disease of the large bowel. Drink water and eat lots of vegetables to soften your stools.
8. Water keeps you alert and energetic. If you’re dehydrated, your blood is literally thicker. This makes it harder for the blood to circulate. As a result, the brain can become less active and you can feel confused and fatigued.
9. Water helps reduce weight. By drinking a glass or two of water before a meal, you will lessen the amount of food you can take in order to feel full. Water has zero calories and will not make you fat.
10. Water keeps your skin soft and radiant.

The Proper Way To Drink Water:
1. Drink water when you wake up. You are naturally thirsty or dehydrated in the morning. Drinking water in the morning helps flush out the toxins that have accumulated all night.
2. Drink 8 to 12 glasses a day.
3. Drink little by little throughout the day. It is preferable to sip water throughout the day rather than to drink two glasses all at once. This will lessen the stress on the heart.
4. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re probably already 2 glasses below your normal water needs. Elderly people are also less sensitive to the body’s need for water.
5. Drink water, not soft drinks, alcohol or coffee.
6. Train children to drink water.
7. Drink more when it’s hot. People living in hot climates need to drink more water. They are more prone to develop kidney stones compared to those living in cooler regions.
8. Drink more as you exercise. When you exercise, you need to drink more water to compensate for fluid loss. Go for an extra 500 ml of water for a 30-minute to 1-hour exercise.
9. Drink more when you’re sick. Even though you don’t feel like it, you really need to drink more water to help your body recover from various infections. If you’re dehydrated, you’ll feel much worse.
10. Drink more if you’re pregnant. Women who are expecting or breast-feeding need additional fluids to stay hydrated. Drink 10 cups of fluids daily and women who breast-feed may take in about 13 cups of fluids a day. Good luck.
How Cleansing Cures Cancer
Evita Ramparte was diagnosed with a serious case of ovarian cancer after a visit to the doctor revealed it was the concerning cause of her constant pain. Told that chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery were among her only options to ever recover, Ramparte was not convinced. After all, she had been living her whole life in ways that she was unhappy with, ‘going with the flow’ of the world and ending up as obese and unhappy.
Instead, Evita opted to use an approach centered around nutrition and lifestyle — one that she says ultimately ended up curing her cancer that doctors said could not truly be cured. She visited an alternative health professional, and began a regiment of Gerson-styled juicing. Radically altering her diet from her usual processed food intake of pizza and doughnuts into freshly made juice from her own home, she also began to realize what it’s like to actually feel healthy and happy
Evita even remembers how the juicing allowed her to remove around 16 or so stones from her gallbladder, stones that are made up of toxic materials that sit within your body and in many cases lead to gallbladder removal surgeries once the mainstream medical establishment becomes involved. Eventually, Evita’s new lifestyle led to a whole new take on life, one that she says revealed her ‘true beauty’ that she had never known. Looking physically healthier all around from healthy fat loss and rejuvenated skin health, Evita also is experiencing the mental benefits of a healthier lifestyle.
And as research has shown, the foods you eat do actually contribute to your physical appearance. Nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables can literally enhance your beauty and overall level of attractiveness by influencing the way your skin looks all around. Specifically, these foods have been shown to lead to a ‘rosy, yellow complexion’ that even surpasses the look of tanned skin. Meanwhile, synthetic and damaging ‘beauty products’ are loaded with toxic chemicals that actually contribute to cancer.
Evita’s story is one of many that is highly inspiring and makes you consider the degree to which we can use natural substances to help fight diseases that are quickly enveloping the United States and other nations around the world.
Treatment For High Blood Pressure or Hypertension
By Dr. Willie T. Ong
(Internist-Cardiologist)

It is true that an occasional rise in blood pressure (BP), say during heavy exercise or stress, usually does not warrant a label of hypertension. A person is said to be hypertensive if he or she has persistent elevations of BP, which is a systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg (millimeters mercury) or a diastolic blood pressure of more than or equal to 90 mm Hg.
For classification purposes, a person has mild hypertension if the systolic BP is between 140 to 159 mm Hg or the diastolic BP is between 90 to 99 mm Hg. These cases may still respond to a change in lifestyle: (a) lose weight and exercise, (b) reduce salt and fat intake and (c) stop smoking and limit alcohol intake.
By contrast, the more serious label of moderate to severe hypertension refers to a systolic BP higher than 160 mm Hg or a diastolic BP greater than 100 mm Hg. These critical elevations of blood pressure make one susceptible to a stroke or a heart attack, hence treatment with medications are needed.
What causes high blood pressure? For 95% of people, there is no specific cause, meaning it is genetic and handed down to you by your parents. Hence, it cannot be cured, only controlled with medications.
Drugs For High Blood Pressure:
The major four classes of drugs used for high blood pressure begins with the letters A, B, C and D.
A stands for ace-inhibitors. Their generic names end with the common syllable “–pril,” for example, Enalapril. Ace-inhibitors are a must for hypertensive patients with diabetes or heart failure. Of course, people’s bodies respond differently and some, around 5-10%, develop side effect of cough.
Should one develop cough, then the angiotensin receptor blockers are good alternatives. The ARB’s, as they are called, end with the syllable “–sartan,” for example, Losartan.
In certain cases, doctors prefer the B’s for beta-blockers. These drugs end with “–olol,” such as metoprolol (brand name Betaloc) or atenolol. Why are beta-blockers so popular? Well, in addition to having multiple benefits — treatment of high blood pressure, heart attack, angina, palpitations and migraine – they are also cheap.
Next, we have the C’s for calcium antagonists. They are the most powerful drugs at the doctor’s disposal, and they usually end with the syllable “–pine.” Calcium antagonists can reduce very high levels of BP. A widely prescribed drug Amlodipine 5 mg tablet daily.
Last but not least, we have the D’s for diuretics, such as Hydrocholorothiazide given at a low-dose 12.5 mg daily. Elderly patients respond well to low doses of diuretics but we just have to watch out for potassium depletion. So if you’re taking diuretics, take two bananas a day just to be safe.
How long should one take these drugs? As mentioned, mild cases of high blood pressure may still respond with a change in lifestyle. But for more severe cases, treatment is for life. But don’t worry, these drugs will really help you live much longer, up to 7-10 added years to your life. Trust me, it’s good for you.

Health Benefits Of Eating A Banana
By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist-Cardiologist)

1. Eat a banana if you have heartburn. The Journal of Nutritional Biochemisty (February, 2001) attests to the anti-ulcer properties of the banana. Bananas act like a natural antacid to the stomach. In this article, they identified the secret component in the banana, the flavonoid leucocyanidin. Studies show that bananas can protect against aspirin-induced gastritis and can significantly increase the mucous membrane lining of the stomach.
2. Bananas are high in fiber and vitamins. A single banana contains 16% of the dietary fiber, 15% of the vitamin C, 11% of the potassium and 20% of the vitamin B6 recommended each day.
3. Bananas are good for the heart. Potassium is an essential mineral needed to regulate water balance, acidity level and blood pressure of the body. A lack of potassium may cause muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat. For patients taking a diuretic medicine, they should take 2 bananas a day to keep the potassium level up. Take note also that bananas have zero sodium (good for high blood pressure) and zero fat and cholesterol (good for those with high cholesterol).
4. Bananas may reduce strokes. Numerous studies have shown that low potassium levels can cause heart palpitations, which can then lead to a stroke.
5. Bananas help counter stress and insomnia. Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that is known to make you feel happy and improve your mood.
6. Diabetics may take bananas in moderation. Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep the blood sugar level up. The glycemic index rating for a ripe, yellow banana is 51 which is fairly good. This means that the carbohydrates in a banana have a medium to slow effect in raising your blood sugar levels. However, as bananas ripen, the starch in the fruit turns to sugar and may cause your blood sugar to rise more. The lesson is: it’s okay to eat a banana, but not the overripe one.
7. Bananas for fatigue and anemia. Have you seen Roger Federer eat a banana between games? The high potassium content prevents cramps and gives ready energy with its easily digestible starch. Bananas are also a rich source of iron, thus it is helpful in patients with anemia.
8. Bananas may prevent leukemia. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology by Kwan et al. (Dec 2004, pp. 1098-107) shows an association between regular consumption of bananas and oranges in children from ages 0-2 and a reduction in childhood leukemia.
9. Bananas may prevent childhood asthma. A European study of 2,640 primary school children in South London concludes that eating bananas at least once a day reduces episodes of wheezing and asthma attacks in children (European Respiratory Journal, Feb. 14, 2007). Eating apples and other fruits were not as beneficial.
10. It’s cheap! The best news about the lowly banana is that it’s cheap. And it comes in a great package. A banana can fit cleanly in your bag. Just cut it high up in the stem. When you feel hungry and stressed, reach for a banana.
The only downside with bananas is that some people may get constipation. If this is the case, then maybe you can mix your bananas with other fruits like papayas and watermelon to loosen your bowels. Taking in lots of water also helps.
I hope you can discover the wonders of the banana and add it to your daily diet. It just might cure you of your medical problems. Remember: Two bananas a day can keep the doctor away.

How To Stay Younger
By Dr. Willie T. Ong (Internist and Cardiologist)

1. Eat breakfast daily.
Eating breakfast gives you more energy, improves your concentration and may help you live longer. The problem with not eating breakfast is that you’ll get very hungry later in the day. This results in overeating and bad food choices for your next meal. The healthiest breakfast would, of course, include some fruit on the side, like a banana, an apple or a slice of mango. Other excellent food choices are eggs, cereals, oatmeal, vegetables, yogurt and skim milk.
2. Take tomato sauce and green tea.
A scientific study shows that eating tomato sauce (rich in lycopene) leads to longer survival for men with prostate cancer. But in order to release its lycopene, tomatoes should be cooked with a little oil. Considered a superfood, green tea contains catechins, which may help retard cancer growth and spread. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps kill off cancer cells.
3. Eat more vegetables and fruits (and less fatty foods).
Every day, we should eat two and a half cups of veggies and one and a half cup of assorted fruits. If you want to stay younger, eat more of nature’s healthiest fruits like bananas, carrots, tomatoes and citrus fruits. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin B6 and folic acid. Green leafy vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fibers known to provide health benefits. Vegetables are also excellent diet foods because they’re low in fat and high in fiber.
4. Regarding food, everything in moderation.
Whether we are talking about protein, fats, eggs or alcohol, take everything in moderation. Excessive alcohol intake leads to a multitude of diseases like liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, stomach ulcers, brain damage, abusive behavior and vehicular accidents.
5. Love is the answer.
Married people or those with close relationships are generally happier compared to single people living alone. Being in love releases endorphins (happy hormones) that strengthen our immune system. If you don’t have a partner, then having a close friend, a pet or a hobby can be a substitute.
6. Laugh a lot.
Laughter is indeed good medicine. Laugh often and laugh out loud. A study at the University of California Irvine College of Medicine reports that after watching a funny video, the viewers’ mood improved dramatically. Depression and anger dropped by 98%, fatigue fell by 87%, and tension was reduced by 61%.
7. Nurture a group of supportive friends.
One study shows that talking to a supportive friend for an hour is as effective as taking a tablet of pain reliever. Invest your time in building close relationships. Another tip is to interact with people younger than you. This is because some of the positive energy of young people will get passed on to you and you’ll feel younger, too.
8. Have (safe) sex more often.
Studies show that healthy men who have sex two or more times a week can decrease their risk for a heart attack or stroke. Women who enjoy sex also tend to live longer than those who don’t. It’s also good exercise for the heart.
9. Take safety precautions.
Follow common-sense rules our moms taught us. Be careful when driving at night. Wear a seatbelt. Don’t drink and drive. Young people should be educated on the dangers of practicing unsafe sex and taking illicit drugs. Stay away from danger and you’ll live longer.
10. Sleep 7 to 8 hours a day.
Resting and sleeping are the best ways to heal and strengthen your body. Have 10 to 15 minute mini-breaks during the day. Whatever relaxes you is also good for your heart and body. According to sleep experts, the best time to sleep is at night.

DON’T SWALLOW SANTOL SEEDS
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

Readers beware! From May until August, market stands are packed with a delicious yellow-orange fruit Filipinos love to eat. Just thinking of a ripe, soft and juicy santol fruit can make our mouths water. Imagine it. It’s so good… even good enough to swallow. Gulp.
Now, what happens? If you swallowed a santol seed, the first crucial information is whether it’s the local or the Bangkok santol variety. If it’s from Bangkok, then the trip along your gut would be more exciting. You see, Bangkok seeds are much bigger, about 3 centimeters in length with sharper pointed edges. If you’re lucky, the fleshy seed will pass down your pharynx, then the esophagus and reach the stomach. In the gut, it will incubate for about 3 hours as the outer fibrous covering is digested and stripped away.
From here on, it’s a matter of luck. Having a bare santol seed in your gut is like carrying a bare knife in your pocket that can cut through your trousers anytime. Once ejected by the stomach, the sharper and deadlier seed or seeds now travel through the narrower and lengthy portions of your small intestines and then the large bowels.
If you’re young and healthy, those seeds may pass through without harm. But if you’re older and have some form of abnormality in your intestines, then it could easily get stuck, leading to an obstruction. The sharp edges may even perforate your bowels leading to infection and death.
In the Philippines, it is estimated that 200 cases of surgical emergencies from swallowed santol seeds are seen yearly at our hospitals. Dr. Reynaldo O. Joson, chair of the Department of Surgery at Ospital ng Maynila, has been educating the public on the dangers of santol seeds.
What about other seeds? Is it safe to swallow tomato seeds or guava seeds? It’s much smaller, but can they lead to appendicitis instead? According to Dr. Joson, there are not enough data to say that such seeds cause appendicitis, injury or death. Tomato and guava seeds are very small, without sharp ends, and are therefore practically harmless.
So if you and your co-workers are binging on a hearty meal of mouth-watering santol, tell them that it’s alright to eat the fruit. You can even treat it like a candy and extract as much juice as you can. But please, don’t swallow the killer seeds. It might be your last.

MAGSUOT NG MALAMBOT NA SAPATOS
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

By Dr. Willie T. Ong

LIKE and SHARE Join Ako C Kim (fan page) for more health tips.

PAANO MAGIGING MAS MATALINO
By Dr. Willie T. Ong

10. Kumunsulta sa doktor at magpa-check up bawat taon. Good luck.

*** The 7 Dangerous Acts after meal ***
DON’T ACT THE 7 ACTIONS BELOW
AFTER YOU HAVE A MEAL
* Don’t smoke- Experiment from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher).
* Don’t eat fruits immediately – Immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. Therefore take fruit 1-2 hr after meal or 1hr before meal.
* Don’t drink tea – Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the Protein content in the food we consume to be hardened thus difficult to digest.
* Don’t loosen your belt – Loosening the belt after a meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted & blocked.
* Don’t bathe – Bathing after meal will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs & body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease. This will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.
* Don’t walk about – People always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake.
* Don’t sleep immediately – The food we intake will not be able to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric & infection in our intestine.

20 Ways To Live Longer
Article and Video By Dr. Willie T. Ong
(Internist and Cardiologist)

Here is my list of 20 strategies to live longer. Let’s start from number 20, to start our countdown.
20. Be more relaxed and less stressed.
One sure way to get a heart attack is to have a workaholic, perfectionist and stubborn personality, the so-called “Type A” personality. In contrast, the “Type B” personality is a more relaxed, less time-conscious and less driven person. They are able to adapt to problems and are less stress-prone.
19. Check your vitamins and supplements.
Vitamins can help fill up the gaps in our diet, especially if we don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables. You may take a multivitamin daily, especially if you feel weak or tired.
18. Pray (in addition to seeking medical care)
In a study of cancer patients, those who confronted their illness through positive thinking, medicines and prayers, actually lived longer.
17. Read up on your disease.
Dr. Joslin, a world renowned diabetes expert, believes that the educated patient lives longer.
16. Get vaccinated.
Consider vaccines for hepatitis B, flu, rabies, tetanus and pneumonia. These are all serious illnesses preventable by a simple vaccine.
15. Limit or avoid alcohol intake.
“Drinking in moderation” is a much abused phrase. Too much alcohol intake can cause a multitude of problems, such as liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, stomach ulcers, oral cancers, brain damage, dementia, nerve damage and vehicular accidents.
14. Do charity work.
Those who volunteered and helped other people had higher levels of happiness, self-esteem and better physical health. Helping others has always been the best stress reliever and anti-depressant.
13. Find a good doctor.
Your doctors’ job is to guide you on your check-ups, such as laboratory tests, cancer screening tests and schedule for vaccines.
12. Exercise moderately.
Moderate exercise has been proven to prevent diabetes, maintain body weight and lessen the pain of arthritis. Try to avoid high impact exercises like basketball and badminton as you grow older. Swimming and brisk walking are excellent exercises.
11. Marry or have a lifetime partner.
Statistics show that, on the average, married persons live longer, probably because they find fulfillment in their spouse and kids. However, single individuals can compensate by having a large support group of family and friends.
10. Be a positive thinker.
Train your mind to think positively. Believe you’ll beat your disease and you can.
9. Consider statin drugs for high cholesterol.
The statins drug’s benefits for patients with high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes have been proven in clinical trials. Ask your doctor if you need to take these drugs.
8. Live a less risky lifestyle.
Young people should be educated on the dangers of practicing unsafe sex, having multiple partners and taking illicit drugs. Limit your risks, avoid accidents, and live longer.
7. Be financially wise.
Learn to save some money for your emergency medical needs.
6. Consider aspirin.
Aspirin has been proven to help patients with diabetes, heart disease, stroke and high cholesterol. The only precaution with aspirin is that it may cause an upset stomach or an ulcer. Thus, we advise patients to take aspirin after meals.
5. Eat fruits and oily fish.
Nature’s healthiest fruits include bananas, carrots, tomatoes and citrus fruits. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin B6 and folic acid. Likewise, tomatoes have high amounts of antioxidants, including beta-carotene and lycopene. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemon are teeming with healthy vitamin C.
4. Eat green leafy vegetables
Vegetables are beneficial for people with heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, bowel problems and various cancers. Vegetables are also excellent diet foods because they’re low in fat and high in fiber.
3. Lose weight, if overweight.
Being obese is associated with all sorts of diseases. Shed off excess weight and feel better.
2. Take medicines for high blood pressure and diabetes.
Studies show that when a patient with severe high blood pressure takes his maintenance medicines, he may live 10 years longer. With regard to diabetes, studies show that the more doctors bring down the blood sugar to normal levels, the greater is the health benefit. These are really lifesaving medicines.
1. Stop smoking.
Smoking damages the heart, lungs, esophagus, stomach, bowels, prostate, and predisposes one to all kinds of cancers. What’s the best way to live longer? Don’t smoke, period. It will save you from so much heartaches and pains. Good luck.
